It’s National Puzzle Day!!! Did you know that puzzles were invented in 1760 by John Spilsbury to teach wealthy children geography? The first puzzles were made from maps glued to wood and then cut into pieces. They were not called puzzles though, but were referred to as dissected maps. They were even used by the children of King George III and Queen Charlotte! Today, puzzles are the number one table game with 1.8 billion sold every year!

Love puzzles? The Friends of Peninsula Community Library will hold their Puzzle Palooza Sale February 9-20. Definitely come buy, but if you have puzzles to donate before then, you can drop them off at the circ desk during open hours! Please, no puzzles with missing pieces or in poor condition!

Funny thing about jigsaw puzzles? Jigsaws were never used in the making of puzzles. In the “old” days, a fretsaw was often the tool utilized to cut the pieces. It turns out that “fretsaw puzzle” just did not have the same ring to it as ‘jigsaw puzzle” to our Victorian forebears!

I have to admit that I am not a puzzle person. However, in the weather winter has offered up this year, I have borrowed one from the library’s collection. Now I just have to open the box! Puzzles are available at the back of the library with no check out required and no due date. Grab one that speaks to you and return it whenever you are done! Happy puzzling!
