(NOTE: It’s a VERY busy time of the year, so I am trying to get weekly updates out, but at a minimum, I will provide updates twice a month.)

We made it to Memorial Day Weekend! I hope everyone has a great kick-off to the summer season. Thank you to the Old Mission Women’s Club Containerscape Committee for the beautiful red, white and blue flowers at the entrance to the township offices!

Congratulations to all the runners who participated in the Bayshore Marathon this morning. The day started with rain, but by the time most runners were headed back towards the finish line, it was sunny and bright.

The Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC) met on Tuesday, May 19, at 2 p.m. They continued their discussion on the guidance provided by the Town Board (TB) for continued zoning language progress within the agricultural zone. There was some great discussion and clarity offered as to the recent TB guidance. They will be making their recommendation to the Planning Commission regarding Farm Stays soon. View the meeting packet here, and watch the meeting on our YouTube channel here (meeting videos are saved for 30 days).

WOMP Update: The Township’s “Defendent-Appellant/Cross-Appellee Peninsula Township’s Third Brief on Appeal” was filed with the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday, May 18. Protect The Peninsula also filed their appeal on May 18, and WOMP has until June 8 to file a reply brief. After WOMP files their reply, this case will be fully briefed, and we will await word from the Sixth Circuit regarding whether they will grant oral arguments and when that will occur.

The Bonobo case is still lingering even with Judge Maloney denying their request for injunction and partially dismissing the case. I will keep you posted when we receive an update via court filings. (View all WOMP court filings here. -jb)

Looking Ahead to Next Week

The Township Board (TB) will meet twice next week. The first is on Tuesday, May 26, at 3 p.m. for our second regular May meeting. There is a packed agenda. We will be discussing: budget and zoning amendments, the proposed Memorandums of Agreement (MOA) between Peninsula Township and Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society and Peter Dougherty Society, and the draft Shoreline Ordinance. View the meeting agenda here and the packet here

We will also have a special meeting on May 27 at 8 a.m. to ratify the decision to enforce the PDR Ordinance, PDR Easement, and the Zoning Ordinance by filing legal claims against David Hague and Hague Acres LLC. We will then go into closed session to discuss settlement strategy with the township attorney and to attend a mediation regarding Peninsula Township vs. David Hague et al. View the agenda here.

Department of Natural Resources Burning Permits: These are updated regularly. Please check this link before lighting any open debris fire.

Reminder from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office: Call 911 for all emergencies (health, safety, property, danger to the public). If you see something – say something!

Please keep an eye on all upcoming meetings via the township website and our live streamed meetings (saved for 30 days on our YouTube Channel.)

  1. Why do we have the Bayshore Marathon? Traffic, congestion, noise and added expense… What is the point? Surely it isn’t to promote the peninsula as that would lead to more traffic, congestion, noise and additional expense. Perhaps this event should not be staged in the future.
