(Editor’s Note: Old Mission Gazette poet laureate Harry Phillips wrote this lovely poem for Mother’s Day. I hope all the moms out there have a great day – not just on Mother’s Day but every day! My mom continues to be with me every minute of every day. -jb)

Mother Sun Rises
(A poem for Mother’s Day)
She rises each day,
Casting her glow,
Across East Bay,
Onto this place we know,
Across orchards and vineyards,
Forests and farms,
Her presence much more,
More than morning’s alarm,
She rises above us,
Caressing our souls,
Her light carrying beams,
Of life eons old,
On Old Mission Peninsula,
We delight when she,
Mother Sun in her glory,
Rises from apogee,
Reminding us not to,
Take for granted,
Our peninsula home,
Where we stand commanded,
Her celestial journey,
Maternal in ways,
Dipping west at night,
Below the waters of West Bay,
And with her last light,
As stars fill the sky,
Her arrival next morning,
Again lights up our lives.
