The Planning Commission (PC) met on Monday, August 24, for their regular meeting. It was a 3 1/2-hour meeting with a lot of discussion (view the Packet, Packet Addition and YouTube Link). The Non-Motorized Plan was introduced for the first time, and three Public Hearings were held:
- Public Hearing – Ordinance #213 Lighting Amendment
- Public Hearing – Ordinance #212 Accessory Dwelling Unit Amendment
- Public Hearing – Ordinance #210 Special Use Permit Approval Language Amendment
Additionally, Draft Zoning Ordinance Articles 5, 7, 8 and 9 were discussed.
The Parks Committee (PkC) met on Wednesday, August 26, for their regular meeting. View the meeting video at the Township’s YouTube channel here.
Our County Drain Commissioner, Andy Smits, has been approved to conduct soil boring samples in the Bowers Harbor Park area. This is preliminary work to determine the source and reason for flooding in the Bowers Harbor Natural Area, the Bowers Harbor Park, and several surrounding neighbors.
Agricultural Advisory Committee Vacancy
Peninsula Township is accepting letters of interest and/or resumes for an individual to serve on the Agricultural Advisory Committee. One position is open with the term expiring on December 15, 2027. This committee meets at 2 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Additional meetings may be scheduled. Applicants must be qualified electors of the township. Please submit a letter of interest and/or resume to Township Supervisor Maura Sanders at [email protected] or mail it to her at 13235 Center Road, Traverse City MI 49686 by 4 p.m. on September 1, 2026.

The Peninsula Township Fire Department is hosting their OPEN HOUSE on Tuesday September 29, 4 – 7 p.m. at Station #1 (14247 Center Road in Mapleton). Stop by for food, fun, tours, demonstrations, training and activities. Bring the whole family!
Peninsula Community Library (PCL): Please keep an eye on the Library’s website for upcoming events! There is always something going on at the library to support our community.

Grand Traverse County Household Hazardous Waste: Sign up is available one month before each event. Visit the Grand Traverse County Recycle Smart website for details on how to make an appointment. Next event is Saturday, Sept. 12, 9 – 2 p.m.
The Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery Department (RecycleSmart) will be conducting Scrap Tire Collection Events. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the Resource Recovery Department, (231) 995-6075. The next event is Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Reminder: Peninsula Township offices are closed Monday, September 7, 2026, Labor Day.
