The calendar of national dates and events we keep in the library workroom says that August is Family Fun Month. That may be so, but that applies to summer in general! However, as I see school supplies and – yes – Halloween decor popping up in the stores, I suppose these are the last few weeks to capture the fun of the summer months.
We are still going strong here at your community library! It has been a busy summer at PCL, with patrons looking for indoor space to escape the smoke, summer reading club frenzy, and good things to share with friends and family.

August beats out June and July as peak vacation months, despite the high heat, often referred to as the dog days of summer. The saying dates back centuries and is in relation to the dog star Sirius which rises and sets with the sun about the same time as our hottest summer days. Regardless, there are often days too hot to be fit for a dog!
No matter the weather, there is still a lot of summer going on here at PCL!
Seed Library. Fall is when our gardens are also getting ready to rest. Save seeds for us for spring! Collect dried flower heads. Bring them to us in a PAPER bag or envelope marked with their name. Hugs to our seed librarian, Judy Heffron!
Sound of Music. Our final evening summer concert on August 18 at 7 p.m. features Genna & Jesse, an Americana duo known for rich harmonies with a blending of soul, jazz, folk and vintage pop. Click here for more info.
A special Kid’s Concert with OMP’s very own Mary Sue Wilkinson is scheduled for August 26 at 11 a.m. and includes a kids’ bike parade (bring their bikes — the Friends of PCL will have decorating supplies) and free ice cream sundaes! The Gift of Life. PCL partners with VERSITI for a blood drive on August 19 from noon-5. Blood stays in Michigan. Register here. Please give – the shortages are CRITICAL!
Quilts for Kids. Join Kellie Chase to transform fabrics into patchwork quilts for kids facing serious trauma – August 25 from 10 – noon. Quilts for Kids is a non-profit organization. Materials provided. RSVP!
Thinking Creatively. Adults paint a watercolor card suitable for framing with Becky Dykstra, August 24 from 2 – 4 p.m.! Materials provided. RSVP!
Summer, of course, is thankfully not over yet, and school for many students starts later than usual this fall. Stop by PCL and pick up a fun End of Summer Challenge Sheet to earn a small prize!
Looking Ahead Just a Bit
Magic for Muggles. Calling all would-be wizards! Join PCL staff member Erica on Sept. 1, 10:30-noon, for DIY fun! Crafts, activities, snacks and more. Dress up if you like! Ages 8 and up! RSVP! “Expecto Patronum!”
