Technology helps us stay connected, manage our schedules, run our businesses, and communicate with customers and family. This month’s Tech Tip is all about a simple question: Is your email inbox helping you stay productive, or is it creating unnecessary risk and stress?

For many people, email has become the center of daily life. It contains receipts, financial information, conversations with customers, appointment confirmations, and access to countless online accounts. Unfortunately, an overloaded inbox can make it difficult to spot important messages and can increase the chances of falling for scams.
One common problem is inbox clutter. When hundreds or thousands of unread emails accumulate, important messages can easily get buried. This can lead to missed deadlines, delayed responses, and overlooked security alerts.
Another issue is phishing emails. Cybercriminals often disguise fraudulent emails as messages from banks, shipping companies, software providers, or even coworkers. Their goal is to convince you to click a link, open an attachment, or provide sensitive information. A simple rule of thumb: If an email creates urgency, asks for personal information, or seems unexpected, take a moment to verify it before responding.
Examples:
Emails to Treat with Caution:
- “Your account will be suspended today. Click here immediately.”
- “You have an unpaid invoice. Open the attachment.”
- “Your package delivery failed. Confirm information now.”
Safer Habits:
- Verify requests directly with the sender through a different platform or trusted contact.
- Hover over links before clicking.
- Delete suspicious messages.
Another smart habit is creating folders and rules to organize your inbox automatically. Sorting messages by vendor, project, or priority can save time and help ensure important communications are not missed.
Cybercriminals don’t just target large companies. Small businesses, local organizations, tourism businesses, wineries, and residents can all become targets. Since email is often the gateway to banking, payment systems, cloud services, and business applications, protecting your inbox is more important than ever.
So, is your email inbox working for you?
The answer: Yes, if it is organized, monitored regularly, and protected with good security habits. No, if it is cluttered, unmanaged, and full of suspicious messages that go unchecked.
You don’t need to be an expert to improve your email security and productivity. A few simple habits can make a big difference:
✓ Unsubscribe from emails you no longer need.
✓ Create folders for important messages.
✓ Delete suspicious emails immediately.
✓ Enable multi-factor authentication on your email account.
✓ Review your inbox regularly instead of letting messages pile up.
Question: How many unread emails are currently sitting in your inbox?
Take a moment and think about it. Could you quickly find an important message from a customer, vendor, family member, or financial institution if you needed it today?
A few minutes spent organizing your inbox now can save hours of frustration and help protect your personal and business information in the future.
Tech Challenge:
Choose one email account this week and:
- Reduce your inbox by at least 50 emails.
- Unsubscribe from five unwanted mailing lists.
- Create three folders to organize important messages.
- Enable multi-factor authentication if it isn’t already turned on.
Small improvements today can lead to a safer, more productive digital life tomorrow. This Tech Tip is brought to you by AcenTek, your local internet company.
