The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to Munson Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of the driver or passenger.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol contributed to the crash, the release said. The incident remains under investigation.
Center Road was closed for approximately six hours while crews worked at the scene. Grand Traverse 911 reported the road was back open at 2:45 p.m.
The Michigan State Police and its Crash Reconstruction Team assisted the Sheriff’s Office, along with the Peninsula Township Fire Department.
